The squad for 2010/2011 are we stronger or weaker?

1 09 2010

So the transfer window has closed and we added Koscielny, Squillaci, Chamakh. But is the squad stronger or weaker as a result of the new signings and departures or are we weaker than last season?

The goalkeepers were an area that we needed strengthening, Arsene pretty much confirmed it with comments like “the number 1 is up in the air” and the resfusal to rule out Schwarzer. Perhaps it was all left too late, yes I think Arsene has to field much of the criticism for this but when Hughes joined Fulham I pretty much knew he wouldn’t sell to us – he hates Arsene. Couple that with the injury to Fulham’s second choice keeper and Schwarzer was going nowhere. So we are left with Almunia as number one, his confidence must be shot to pieces knowing that Arsene was looking to replace him right until the window closed. Fabianski has shown himself to be a very weak backup keeper as well. It is a massive worry for us this position, and might cost us silverware, but only one person will carry the can for this. Verdict – no change from last season

We had issues in defence last term, the reality of only having two centrebacks hurt us at times. Sylvestre was not Premier League quality and not Arsenal quality. Sol Campbell was a great signing for the second half of the season, which timed well with the routine Gallas injury so again we were back down to two centrebacks. But all three of those players have left the club. Two replacements have arrived, Sebastian Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny the former brings experience but has yet to feature so no further comment can be given and the latter looks promising but needs to adapt to the league. Johan Djourou also returns from long term injury, but there are concerns he will stay fit for the season so he will be fourth choice I feel. But we now start the season with what appears four decent central defenders, that gives more confidence than last year did. No change in the left/right back positions but I don’t think we had issues there and the return to fitness of Gibbs will provide some competition for the at times lacklustre Clichy. Verdict – stronger than last season

In midfield we have not added, however the emergence of Wilshere is a bonus. A year older and with half a season of loan experience with Bolton seems to have made him more of a player. The early season form of Rosicky is promising too. But in reality we were pretty strong in midfield anyway, and there have been no major changes so, Verdict – no change from last season

Our forward line was going strong, banging goals in until van Persie got injured. But no issues like that this seaso…oh hang on. Bendtner can cover, ahh but he is injured too. At least we have Chamakh, he looks promising and has a high work rate. A player who offers something different to what we saw from the dwindling Eduardo last season. Provided we can keep van Persie fit for most of the season and have Bendtner back at some point we will have competition for the front position. Walcott looks transformed too, he could even be given a shot in the middle if we fancied it. Goals were not a problem last season, and I doubt they will be this. Verdict – stronger than last season

So overall I think we have a stronger squad than last year, not more depth but certainly more quality in the depth we have. The 25 man squad rule wont hurt us too much either as we have a long list of under 21s we can add at any point in the season. As I said before goals being scored wont be an issue for us, it’s the conceding goals that will be the problem – just like it was las season. While Arsene has strengthened in the central defensive positions I do still worry about the keepers. Schwarzer would not have offered an improvement compared to Almunia, but he would have been a far more confident player and that is something that I think many gooners are worried about.

Is this it?

4 08 2010

I am usually quite optimistic, but sometimes I fear for Arsenal. When Henry left I recall saying no in the club shop when they offered Champions League patches to put on my shirt, the season before last I was also not so confident about our chances and we just got 4th place. This close season has been a tough one for gooners, and I worry things could get tougher over the next 9 months.

So is this it?

If you look at our transfer dealings; Chamakh was a good addition to the squad but we had chased him for the best part of a year so it came as no real surprise when he signed. Koscielny has not set the fans on fire with excitement. We have lost Gallas, as much of an arse he was he is still a very very good defender. Sol Campbell as well, a huge influence at the close of last season – departed. I know Arsene is tight and doesn’t want to burden the club with lots of debt, which is completely the correct thing to do, but it’s a bit like dying with £1million pounds in the bank; you can’t spend it from the grave. I don’t want us to go out and spend all our money, but it would be nice to have one or two players we have heard of arrive for a decent amount of money.

Then there is the Cesc factor, this I feel is massively linked to the above. The club, to me, appears not to have a massive ambition in the transfer market. Yes Arsene is the best at unearthing unknown players, and I don’t want us to become a Championship Manager +£250million cheat mode LOLZ type team like Man Citeh, but a few more Arshavins would help here. Cesc needs more players like him, he wants to win things and experience what he has twice now with his national side. A few years ago he was part of the collection of very good youngsters with a lot of promise, he isn’t now, he needs a few more experienced top quality players in addition to those decent youngsters. I take a lot of what is in the press with a pinch of salt, but I do believe he sat down with Arsene and didn’t feel too confident with what he heard. This no doubt added to his wonder of what if I return to Barca now. When he leaves it will really hurt, more than it has any player I can recall, I think because I have watched him develop from a youngster at Arsenal to what he is today. Most of the time they are already much the finished product or they move on before they realise what they could have been with us, but with Cesc you feel like you have been there all the time.

I also wonder if this is it for Arsene. He only has one year left on his contract, I know he never renews until during the last year and this is again pessimistic speculation. But he has always said he would not spend a transfer kitty before he left to leave a new manager with nothing. Is that what he is doing? Has he had enough, his project has not worked as well as he thought and to build another team is a good 4 years of work by which time he will be almost 65, does he want another 4 years of anguish at the helm of our club? I think the Cesc departure overtures will have had an impact on this too, Cesc has said Arsene is like a father to him and I pretty much guess that works in reverse too. To see a player you have built depart might be the last tie for Arsene, with that severed he might want to move on as well.

Pretty pessimistic stuff I know, but I wonder is this the end of a chapter in our history before we move onto the next one?

New numbers, new names – “we’re the north bank, we’re the north bank….”

20 07 2010

picture from Arsenal.com

All change at Arsenal? Well minor details are, the club officially announced today that Robin van Persie will wear the number 10 shirt this season. He joined when Dennis Bergkamp was our much loved number 10, in the intervening years Gallas (strangely) wore the forwards’ shirt but with his departure Robin can take the famous shirt back up the the front of the pitch. Carlos Vela will switch to the number 11 shirt, which sort of confirms he will be at the club for at least one more season, but we need to see performances worthy of the number 11 shirt.

Another change was announced yesterday, the “quadrants” will be ditched at the stadium and the Highbury stand names will be adopted. The North Bank will be blocks 4-13 in the lower and 94-109 in the upper, the East Stand will be blocks 14-19 in the lower and 110-115 in the upper, the Clock End (with a new clock) will be 20-29 in the lower and 116-131 in the upper, with the West Stand having 30-3 in the lower and 132-93. Good to have named stands rather than coloured ones. Hopefully it will help it feel more like “our” stadium, but it’s something that should have been done from day 1 rather than a number of years down the line. But credit must go to Ivan Gazidis and his Arsenalisation program.

The club confirmed that Gallas and Sylvestre are expected to sign for other clubs for the coming season, still no news on Sol at the moment though despite numerous press rumours.

The squad left for the Austrian training camp yesterday, a full list of players is here on the main site – the most note-able absentee is Eduardo with his move likely to be confirmed in the next day or so. Cesc and Robin are of course still on holiday following their World Cup exploits.

I mentioned there will be a competition, well the prize will be two club level seats for the second day of the Emirates Cup, more details later today on how to enter. Thanks for reading.

Our first injury of the season

6 07 2010

So our first injury of the season has occurred, well by all accounts it was already there but Nicklas Bendtner is likely to miss the start of the season according to reports in this morning’s Mirror. The injury stems from his car crash last September, it would appear he is in a lot of pain in his groin. Yet again, as the article states, questions will be asked about our medical department and how long it takes to heal players or if they have ever fully healed (think Gallas, Arshavin last season) I wonder if the results of the investigation into the department will be made public – I doubt it.

In other news rumours are that Koscielny will be officially revealed today as an Arsenal player. YoungGunsBlog also says he will wear number 6. I do still think we need at least one more CB plus Campbell, or two more if he goes to Celtic. More on twitter during the day if any announcement is made.

Arsenal Home Kit revealed (it’s got white sleeves!), some transfer stuff as well

1 07 2010

picture from arsenal.com

Above is the new home kit for the forthcoming season, it’s red with white sleeves – brilliant! There has been a lot of fan backlash following our current home kit not having fully white sleeves and you have to think that Ivan Gazidis listened to this and perhaps pointed Nike in the right direction. The players seem to like it too with Alex Song, Thomas Vermaelen and Theo Walcott all talking about how traditional it looks. I like it, it looks like my last home shirt I bought (the last O2 kit) and I pre-ordered one today from the official store. It comes out on the 27th July, but you can pre-order now to avoid the queue at the armoury on the day.

picture from arsenal.com

One thing to note in the pictures for the new kit is the number that include Cesc, perhaps the club are more confident of him staying now. I wonder if his experience of bench warming for Spain has concentrated his mind a little? Maybe, maybe not but there has been a lesser number of “Barca DNA” stories recently – perhaps the Catalans have less money than they thought? John Cross in The Mirror writes today that Cesc may stay after all following his experiences at the World Cup.

But then again when Thierry left there were pictures of him wearing the then new kit.

The transfer merry-go-round continues to gather pace, Laurent Koscielny still hasn’t completely signed but all things point to that being a mere formality. But our defensive corps took a beating yesterday as Sylvester, Gallas and Sol all saw their contracts expire. Sol was up in Glasgow looking at Celtic, but he is delaying a decision – perhaps to see what we can offer him? This morning The Sun links us to Per Mertesacker, a good signing for us and clearly an area we need to improve on following last season.

Some don’t care about The Arsenal, Sunday now important, Chamakh

6 05 2010

I have only now been able to write about the Blackburn game, if I had done so any earlier it would have mainly been brought to you by the words; bollocks, useless, fucking and bastards. I have not seen any highlights, I didn’t even try to find any, but I have read the numerous press reports. The team turned up, but not everyone cares about The Arsenal. Some of the performances were below par according to various reports.

I can totally understand not being good enough, I’m not good enough to play for Arsenal – but if I was ever given the chance I would run the lungs out of my body to show how much I wanted it. But today’s football is not like that, many players only care about the paycheque (look at Adebayor last night for Citeh) they never love their club. I hope the players got a massive bollocking from Arsene on Monday, and Tuesday, and Wednesday, and today, and tomorrow, maybe he can just give them a stern look on Saturday. The players who don’t try need to know they will be shipped out if this carries on. Changes are needed, but I don’t think they will be as wholesale as many fans are crying out for.

Sunday should have been a nice easy Sunday stroll for the players (I suspect a few were looking forward to that) but given last nights result we simply cannot lose, or 4th place is ours and the unthinkable happens. Please, please don’t let that occur.

In transfer news Marouane Chamakh has confirmed what we all knew for a while anyway, that he will join Arsenal. He might be here in a week or so. It looks like Gallas is on his way out, sources say the latest contract talks “did not go well” and there were strong rumours of a 2 year deal with PSG yesterday. So a defender must be on that shopping list as well……

A week of not much

30 04 2010

As the season nears it’s end, this feeling of nothing genuine happening regarding Arsenal is here to stay. Yes there are press reports, Arshavin was the target this week; stories in the press made out he wanted to leave the club, they are twisted comments or quotes from “agents” which are used to make a decent story for the back pages in a football-less week. Yes we have not seen much from Andrey this season, more to come on that in the next few weeks, but he will be with us next season.

We also had the quotes from Arsene that he will sign a player before the World Cup, Chamakh no doubt, but there are the stories of 2 or 3 players that just add to the Football Manager based dreams of a few fans. I do not doubt we will strengthen this summer, money is there for the first time in a while but Arsene will also consider who might leave. Which sort of leads to Gallas, he has a deadline of the end of May to sign for us – good to see some hardball played by the club. Gallas has been a very good player for us, this season was probably his best before it was curtailed by injury, he would be a loss no doubt but if he wants to move on for one final club before retirement you cannot begrudge him.

But other than that there is not much happening in truth, the press fight over a few quotes to make some stories up but there is not much emerging from camp Arsenal just yet…..apart from this photo

Arsene’s pre-Citeh press conference

23 04 2010

Arsene held his usual pre-match press conference earlier today, watching it on ArsenalTV is often quite different to how the papers report things. Much of the press conference initially surrounded the return of Adebayor, Arsene deflected away from this initially saying that we also welcome Vieira and Kolo back. I suspect the latter two will get a better reception that our former striker. The boss said we will welcome them back and respect them and he wants the fans to do the same, adding that the crowd need to be behind us focusing on the game – not sure that will happen but we will see.

There were also questions on Arsene’s future; he said it will be decided by how well he does and secondly if he enjoys what he is doing. There was the usual “what if another club came in for you” but this was rebuffed with the “I will honour my contract” line. I think we will get to early in 2011 before Arsene commits to any more years as manager.

There was also the transfer rumour mill, started by the suggestion of Joe Hart. The response from Arsene was “all the rumours are wrong, any name you give me (today) they are wrong” citing the market not yet being open. I will leave the transfer merry-go-round to another day as well.

On the keeper subject there was the question of Fabianski starting, Arsene said “come to the game, you will see who starts in goal”. I am worried if he does start, but I’m not sure we have any other option. In other team news Arshavin will not return for this game but should be back for Blackburn. Eduardo missed Wigan with a broken toe but will be in the squad tomorrow, Alex Song also makes a welcome return to the side.

I’m not feeling that upbeat about the game at the moment, the recent poor results combined with facing a Citeh side chasing 4th (or possibly 3rd) place means I doubt it will be a comfortable afternoon in the stands. Perhaps the Adebayor factor can distract us from the pain of recent games.

Thanks for reading.

Arsenal v Wolves, injuries mount as quickly as the national debt

2 04 2010

Arsene held his pre-match press conference earlier today, much of the talk surrounded injuries to players which does dominate the thoughts of most Arsenal fans at the moment. In no particular order he had the following to say;

On Cesc – He was kicked (by Puyol) in the same place that he was kicked against Birmingham at the weekend, but he did not crack his bone before the Puyol challenge. “We will have to fight more without him here” was a fair statement, we missed him earlier this season but I suspect Samir Nasri will be able to fit into the central playmaker role following his foray there previously. But Cesc should be fit for the World Cup as it is only a small crack in the bone and not a break.

On Arshavin – It is a calf injury and he will be out for 21 days minimum, but Arsene doesn’t think he is finished for the season despite reports to the contrary from Russia.

On Gallas – Also his calf, but he will be out longer than 3 weeks. Arsene admits it was a mistake to play him against Barcelona. He also doesn’t feel that was his last game for the club.

van Persie – “We are trying to get him back as soon as possible anyway” but I do wonder if there now might be more pressure from Robin to get back a little bit sooner.

Clichy and Denilson are ok to face Wolves.

Looking towards the game Arsene admitted that he will rotate a bit, players do need some rest given how high the output was against Barcelona in midweek. I also think the enforced changes might perhaps see an adjustment in formation, perhaps more 4-4-2 based than 4-3-3 without completely changing things. I would expect Eboue at right back with Theo in front of him tomorrow. We should go at Wolves, there is no point sitting back and hoping for things opening up. They are there for the taking despite their recent form. I expect Sol to start as well, Arsene said “(Sol) will be back tomorrow” during his press conference, so Alex Song will be in the midfield no doubt.

There, again, has been much hysteria that our season is over as we are now without Cesc. It isn’t. I even saw some ludicrous posts on a forum that we might struggle for fourth place. Fucking crazy some of our “fans” are, I mean we have 10 points on 4th place and have some very winnable games even without Cesc playing. Lighten up people. As I said last week the world has not ended, this has been a good season and in truth better than we hoped for. Keep keeping the faith and get behind the team tomorrow!

Arsenal 2 – 2 Barcelona, still in the tie but at what cost?

1 04 2010

Last night Arsene took a gamble on the fitness of a number of players, 3 of them left the pitch injured. I was surprised that Gallas started given that only a few weeks ago he was far from match fitness, perhaps Sol not being able to play so many games in quick succession was on Arsene’s mind. Gallas broke down midway through the first half and was holding the calf that had kept him put previously – I think it’s fair to say his season is over now. Arshavin, who only made the bench on Saturday due to a knock, didn’t look part of the game either. He is massively short of match fitness, he took another knock in a challenge and was also substituted. Two subs used before halftime, not what you wanted to see.

Late in the game, after we had made our third sub, Cesc was holding his leg and could barely walk. Barca were down to 10 men at this point, I would have taken him off, there was only a few minutes to go and I think the risk of aggravating his injury far outweighed the match. But he remained on the pitch. Reports late last night were of a possible broken leg, I suspect it might be a fracture rather than a break but no doubt more will be reported today – but I fear that is another player done for the season.

Onto the game though. We were the underdogs for this one, Barcelona are the best club side in world football and the opening half hour showed why. Perhaps the players were slightly in awe of them but we barely touched the ball, Barcelona gave us the treatment we give many other sides when we tear them apart. It was quite sobering. The passing across the back four and midfield was reminiscent of us at our free-flowing best, and perhaps we would have done the same had they given us the ball at some point! It was end to halfwayline stuff for a lot of the first half, the much maligned Almunia made a number of fine reaction saves that really did keep us in it. With about 10 minutes to go in the first half we did get in the game, we made some breaks at their defence and had them under a bit of pressure, but halftime arrived and that allowed Barca to re-group.

The second half started and almost immediately there was a goal, Imbrahimovic got on the end of a high ball and tipped it over Almunia. Whilst the Spaniard had to take some of the blame Song, playing in defence following Gallas’ removal, should have covered better. The players all looked like they were just getting back into the game, they didn’t look awake at all. The floodgates were threatening to open now, Barca passed the ball with the ease they had in the first half and a few times tore us open. The second goal came again via Ibrahimovic and the Arsenal players heads dropped, you could see it.

I feared this was going to be a real hammering at this point, 4 or 5 perhaps, but a substitution changed the game. Walcott replaced Sagna (Eboue slotted into rightback) and his pace on the right side clearly worried Barca. They are not a quick team by any stretch at the back, time and time again Walcott beat his man and we feared for no end product but he was getting the ball into the box or going at goal on his own. One of these bursts allowed Theo to get a shot off and Valdes should have done better but the ball was in the back of the net. Theo gets a lot of stick from Arsenal fans, but he has shown what he can do and if he keeps that up to a consistent level we will see more of him (keep playing him Arsene!). It was 2-1, could we? could we?

We attacked more and sort of had Barca on the ropes, but they could thread a pass through us and the threat was never to go away. A few more heart stopping moments were to arrive but it was good to see Almunia clutch the ball to his chest at the other end of the pitch. Then the moment was to come, we had the ball in the box, Cesc had it at his feet and was felled by Puyol. The ref blew his whistle, the crowd erupted. I looked at Cesc and he was shaking his finger, I think he didn’t want to see Puyol sent off. But the ref produced a red card.

This was a defining moment for our captain, in more ways than we knew at the time, he had the chance to score against his boyhood team to earn a draw for us. Cesc cooly slotted home and we were level. Only a few minutes were left and we held out for the draw.

One thing about the ref, he was terrible. All night he made poor decisions. Song booked for an early foul, Cesc booked for getting the ball (meaning he would have missed the second leg had he not been injured later in the game) and a number of fouls against us but few called on Barca. Not an even performance by any means.

Thierry got a good reception when he came on as a late sub, then a slightly ironic boo when he first touched the ball. But he stayed till the end for his goodbye to us. We still love you TH14.

So did we deserve the result? Not entirely, Barca were the better team, I have no doubt about that and even the most rose-tinted gooner would have to agree with that. However we did take them on, we looked threatening when we broke against their defence. The back 4 looks a little slow at times and relies of the midfield and attack scoring more goals than they concede I feel.

But it boils down to one thing, we had 4 chances to score; we took 2 of them and one produced a fine save from Valdes. Barcelona had loads of chances to score and kill the game off, but they didn’t and we got back in – sound familiar? They have two away goals and to see us winning at the Nou Camp is a massive ask. But we have to be proud of the team last night, it was a good match and a great result even if we didn’t fully deserve it.

All thoughts turn to Cesc now, I will post later my thoughts if I get time but will certainly update twitter as the day goes on any any news emerges. Thanks for reading.
