Arsenal 5 – 0 Porto (agg6-2) Super Nic, Super Nasri, Super Arsenal

10 03 2010

In their last two visits to Arsenal, Porto lost 4-0 and 2-0. There was trepidation in some quarters that last night would see Arsenal struggle to overcome the 2-1 deficit we had from the first leg. No Fabregas, no Gallas, our fit striker having had a poor game on Saturday, some said everything pointed towards Arsenal struggling.

However this Arsenal side are putting distractions to one side and just getting on with playing football the way they want and, usually, winning. Despite fast starts, early goals have not been something we had seen this season; a lack of goals inside the opening 15 minutes has been oft commented on, but last night Nicklas Bendtner stepped up and fired home on 10 minutes following a header won by Arshavin then the Russian breaking with the ball. Nerves were settled and we took hold of the game. The attacking play we have come used to continued, chances were being created and had it not been for Porto ‘keeper Helton there would have been more goals early on. Bendtner was to provide our second on 25 minutes, redemption for him and a reward for fans’ patience on Saturday.

But at 2-0 up we knew that a goal for Porto would put the tie level again and our defence did at times look shaky, Sol in particular looked lost a few times and played some poor balls. But we weathered the storm, and going into the break two goals up was welcome tonic for all present.

The possibility of Porto being level in the tie was a little evident in the second half, we started slightly slower than in the first and Porto did seem to pick up play a bit better than we did. They attacked and had a few corners, the most worrying of which was a save on the line at the far post by Samir Nasri, who chested the ball down and Almunia gladly held the ball. This was not to be the only thing of note Nasri would do, shortly afterwards we broke down the Porto right. 3 defenders surrounded Nasri as he entered the box, some excellent footwork saw him round all three, then a shot past Helton into the far corner produced possibly one of the finest goals the home fans have seen in a while, certainly this season. 3-0 to Arsenal, the tie was ours.

Porto knew it, they sat back, but they still attacked. A counter attack from a corner, this time for Arsenal rather than against, was reminiscent of The Invincibles as Arshavin broke with the ball through the middle, he played the ball to substitute Eboue who rounded the keeper to fire home our fourth of the night. Eboue was again involved in the build up to our fifth goal, he was felled in the Porto area and Bendtner dispatched the resulting penalty to complete his first professional hattrick and complete the rout with virtually the last kick of the game.

Bendtner played as well as he did against Burnley, but this time the chances were converted and his 3 goals were good to see and will boost his confidence. I think the reception he got from the fans upon leaving the field on Saturday would have helped. Arshavin was excellent as well, he seems to excel in the European fixtures more so than he does in the Premier League, his trickery and footwork has more time in the European arena. Nasri, magnificent goal aside, was excellent in the “cesc” role and shows he can step into it when required.

So we are into the quarter finals of the Champions League, I hope we are not drawn against either English side (assuming they qualify) as I suspect they will not be beatable over the two legs given our recent performances against them, I also think it would hurt the team less to go out to a strong European side than it would to a domestic rival. I still think the Premier League is our more winnable trophy but am happy to see us progress further in the Champions League.

But we can revel in a demolition of Porto, 3 goals from Super Nic and a fine team performance. Come on you Gunners!!!!!

The players need us, Burnley preview

6 03 2010

Today is another important match, as fans we need to be fully behind the team. Forget the poor performances by certain players, forget the mistakes that have cost goals and results. The team spirit was massively evident in the latter half of the Stoke game following the injury to Ramsey. That spirit needs to continue into the crowd, every home game this season needs a great atmosphere.

Today I think that will be helped by the support for Aaron, he says he is overwhelmed by the support he has received in his official statement, but you can tell he is clearly still distressed by the whole thing and also what is interesting is what (or who) he does not speak of. There will be a number of banners in the ground, REDaction and arseblog have had some made, try and get to the ground early if you can to take a look – I will try and get some photos.

Team news wise there are some players back from injury; namely Arshavin, Diaby and Denilson, however Sol is out and Gallas remains sidelined so I would expect Sylvester to start. Alex Song is of course missing due to his two match suspension. However the team should be strong enough to convincingly beat a poor Burnley side who are a much different prospect to the team we faced in December. Arsene thinks we are still in the title hunt, and he is right. But our run in might not be the 10 easy games as some predict, there are a few tough games in there as well but as long as we play to our best we can be up there come the end of the season.

Make it loud today gooners.

Aaron Ramsey, Stoke 1 – 3 Arsenal

28 02 2010

You can’t talk about yesterday’s game without first mentioning the injury to Aaron Ramsey. Early in the second half Ryan Shawcross and Ramsey went in for a challenge together, the aftermath was witnessed by myself and many others on TV of Aaron in a heap on the floor waving to the bench for assistance with his lower right leg clearly broken. Cesc and Thomas Vermaelen looked visibly distressed and Sol Campbell looked furious. I had to leave the room, much like when Eduardo suffered a similar fate almost exactly 2 years ago.

Whatever is said by the media, Stoke City, Tony Pulis or Shawcross himself; irrespective of there being no malice in the challenge you cannot escape the fact that on of our most promising youngsters is currently in hospital with a broken leg. At 19 he will hopefully recover, but my worry is that this injury will affect him much in the same way that Eduardo has been affected. Eduardo is not the same player he was, he has niggly injuries and he shys away from challenges which is totally understandable. I wonder what effect yesterday’s game had on the Crozillian as well. More news on Ramsey’s condition as it arrives.

Looking back at the game it started same old, same old. A long throw from Delap was badly defended and Stoke were 1 up early on. No real surprise to me. It took us a good half hour to get into the game but when we did we started to play well and had plenty of fight. Our equaliser came from a lovely Fabregas cross which Bendtner met and placed a great looping header into the net, a nice goal for Nic. At half time we looked like we could score another and win this, something we have not done on our two recent visits to Stoke.

The start of the second half was not as fluid as the first had ended. Then the incident happened. The game fell flat, unsurprisingly, and I didn’t feel like watching. Our two goals came in the 7 added minutes, the first a penalty following a handball (it was generous but we had been denided two clearer penalties in the game) and the second was from a rebound which Vermaelen tapped in from a few yards. Both goals were celebrated by the players in front of our support with gestures that they were for Aaron. I was pleased but the result had a sour taste following the injury.

After Chelsea lost we are now only 3 points behind them, the race is still on. We lost the title after a broken leg two years ago, but the reaction of the players – the post match huddle led by Cesc and Sol shows a different character to the team this time round. I am not sure if this will help them focus minds for the title push but there clearly is a strong team bond there.

A mention on Sol, he clearly loves Arsenal still. He was properly celebrating after our third goal and his experience could we be invaluable for our title push – this might have been a great signing for us.

Finally a word on the press, some but not all have been part of this injury to Ramsey. The “get stuck in” and “Arsenal don’t like being kicked” or “they don’t like it up them” has been written about so often by the press that it glorifies  the tactics of Bolton, Birmingham, Blackburn, Stoke etc and makes it ok. Yes we can play in a physical game, Man Utd or Chelsea give us a physical game, but they don’t go too far. Clubs often do, 3 broken legs in 5 years is testament to this and whilst nothing will be done some people need to look themselves in the mirror.

Stoke v Arsenal (FA Cup) Preview

24 01 2010

Today sees us face Stoke in the FA Cup, a continuation of our tougher draws this season compared to the holders. Given our ever increasing injury list it is no surprise that Arsene said a number of the youngsters will play;

After confirming Jack Wilshere, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre would be the squad he added: “We have called up Kyle Bartley, Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Francis Coquelin, Gilles Sunu, and Craig Eastmond.

“Sol will be OK to play [after regaining fitness] but, right now, I don’t know if I play him. However it is a big opportunity for him if he does.

“I have to make a decision at right back too. Eastmond is possible. We moved him from there to central midfield in the past, so we’ll see. But Coquelin can play right back as well.”

We have some massive games coming up in the league so I think it is only fair to concentrate on that when you take our injuries into account. Whilst I would love another Wembley appearance I don’t want that to be at the expense of the league when we, currently, have a genuine chance of winning it. But Arsene is in a no win situation, if we go out there will be complaints, stay in the competition and cock up the league there will be complaints as well.

The game is on ITV so we will have to endure the commentary again, not the best thing for a Sunday lunchtime.

Twitter updates during the game. Enjoy it wherever you are watching.

Sol does the double (stint at Arsenal)

13 01 2010

Picture from Arsenal.com

Last night Sol Campbell played 45 minutes for Arsenal against West Ham. It was the 45 minutes he still owed us even though it was for the reserves. The signing is pretty much all confirmed and I would expect the official website to confirm it today sometime in April. It is a strange signing in Arsenal and Arsene terms. A former player and one who is 35 years of age.

But we have to trust Arsene on this one, we do need decent cover at centreback. Senderos is pretty much set to leave, so Sol must be in better condition that Sylvester otherwise we wouldn’t have gone in for him. It would have been nice to bring Patrick back as well but perhaps his wages/fitness are what put Arsene off. Couple that with the fact that we have seen Sol in training for 2 months so know what condition he is actually in. His experience will no doubt benefit the dressing room as well.

I remember the first time Sol signed for us, I was on holiday in Lanzarote and did not believe it when I heard. This time I am on Ice Planet Hoth but it is about as unbelievable as before. Here’s hoping we can sing the “Double, Double” song to Sol come the end of the season!

Sol to play for reserves tonight

12 01 2010

From the official website:

Tonight’s Reserve team to face West Ham United at Upton Park features Sol Campbell, who plays tonight on a Reserve League registration.

Talks are ongoing with Sol with a view to a permanent move back to Arsenal Football Club.

If Phil goes will Sol return? No news on Everton game

8 01 2010

It’s still cold and there is still snow on the ground. We haven’t signed anyone yet, but the Spanish papers are in full “Cesc is off” mode. Nothing more to say on that subject.

John Cross in The Mirror reports that Sol Campbell may be set for a return to the club after impressing in training recently with us. From what the report says the deal is incumbent on Senderos leaving, I fully expect that to happen and I was surprised when it didn’t in the summer. He looks completely frozen out by the club and Arsene now, the number of short term injuries keeping him out of game after game is slightly suspicious and his time at the club must clearly be up. I hope he can forge a decent career somewhere else and get a place in the World Cup team this summer. But back to Sol, I can see the why for the experience angle but he must be past it by now. If people were concerned about Vieira’s fitness surely the same must apply to Sol. Arsene will also go back on his not resigning a player mantra.

On the subject of Vieira, he appears to have signed for Citeh. The reception for him will be very different to someone else in the team when they visit in April. There are also reports of a 6 month get out clause for Citeh, perhaps they have learnt a lesson with other players they have recently purchased? But they are now the rest home for ex-Arsenal players given the financial difficulties Portsmouth face.

On the weather front there is no news on Saturday’s game. I doubt the surface conditions have changed that much since Wednesday night, there has been little extra snow so far but what is on the ground is pretty much frozen. Hopefully if it is called off there will be a bit more notice than there was in midweek.
