Sol does the double (stint at Arsenal)

Last night Sol Campbell played 45 minutes for Arsenal against West Ham. It was the 45 minutes he still owed us even though it was for the reserves. The signing is pretty much all confirmed and I would expect the official website to confirm it today sometime in April. It is a strange signing in Arsenal and Arsene terms. A former player and one who is 35 years of age.

But we have to trust Arsene on this one, we do need decent cover at centreback. Senderos is pretty much set to leave, so Sol must be in better condition that Sylvester otherwise we wouldn’t have gone in for him. It would have been nice to bring Patrick back as well but perhaps his wages/fitness are what put Arsene off. Couple that with the fact that we have seen Sol in training for 2 months so know what condition he is actually in. His experience will no doubt benefit the dressing room as well.

I remember the first time Sol signed for us, I was on holiday in Lanzarote and did not believe it when I heard. This time I am on Ice Planet Hoth but it is about as unbelievable as before. Here’s hoping we can sing the “Double, Double” song to Sol come the end of the season!

If Phil goes will Sol return? No news on Everton game

8 01 2010

It’s still cold and there is still snow on the ground. We haven’t signed anyone yet, but the Spanish papers are in full “Cesc is off” mode. Nothing more to say on that subject.

John Cross in The Mirror reports that Sol Campbell may be set for a return to the club after impressing in training recently with us. From what the report says the deal is incumbent on Senderos leaving, I fully expect that to happen and I was surprised when it didn’t in the summer. He looks completely frozen out by the club and Arsene now, the number of short term injuries keeping him out of game after game is slightly suspicious and his time at the club must clearly be up. I hope he can forge a decent career somewhere else and get a place in the World Cup team this summer. But back to Sol, I can see the why for the experience angle but he must be past it by now. If people were concerned about Vieira’s fitness surely the same must apply to Sol. Arsene will also go back on his not resigning a player mantra.

On the subject of Vieira, he appears to have signed for Citeh. The reception for him will be very different to someone else in the team when they visit in April. There are also reports of a 6 month get out clause for Citeh, perhaps they have learnt a lesson with other players they have recently purchased? But they are now the rest home for ex-Arsenal players given the financial difficulties Portsmouth face.

On the weather front there is no news on Saturday’s game. I doubt the surface conditions have changed that much since Wednesday night, there has been little extra snow so far but what is on the ground is pretty much frozen. Hopefully if it is called off there will be a bit more notice than there was in midweek.

Arsenal v Standard Liege preview, Arsene’s press conference, Gibbs returns

23 11 2009

Arsène held his usual pre-game press conference today ahead of our Champions League tie against Standard Liege on Tuesday night. The initial news from the press conference was on the player availability, it will be the same group of players who faced Sunderland with the addition of Kieran Gibbs who has surprised Arsène with the speed of his return. I think it is also good that Gallas did not pick up an injury despite limping for some of the game on Saturday. Arsène also talked about some longer term injuries; Bendtner and van Persie are both “some time away”, Gael Clichy is 2-3 weeks, he then said “have I forgotten somebody” only to be reminded of Abou Diaby who has 3 weeks out due to another calf injury.

I would expect some rotation to take place, Gibbs is likely to get the nod ahead of Traore and perhaps Senderos will join Vermaelen and Eboue in a back four. I suspect Theo might get the nod to start, perhaps through the middle. Attacking wise though it is very hard to predict who might start given the wealth of options in the team.

The mood in the squad is one of disappointment following the defeat at Sunderland, however a win would not only turn this round but also help us finish top of the group. Which should be what the players are focussed on at this juncture, Sunday can be thought about from Wednesday. We need to be focussed against Liege, they scored 2 quick goals in the away tie and a repeat of which is something which I don’t want to even comprehend.

Arsène said a top of the group finish would feel like a job well done, and despite only needing a point from the next two games to qualify there is no temptation to be defensive. I suspect this might be linked to the fact the team don’t understand such a concept, as enjoying as flowing attacking football is to watch it does not help calm this supporter’s nerves in tight games (or even those when we are a few goals up).

A win tomorrow would be a nice response from the players, not only to their disappointment but that of the fans as well. Defeats hurt, we as fans want to be back to winning ways and hopefully that will resume tomorrow night and carry on into the weekend.

Late news tomorrow either here or on twitter if any arrives.

Arsenal 2 – 1 Liverpool (Carling Cup)

29 10 2009

Our Carling Cup campaign rolled on last night as Liverpool came to the Grove. The game opened at a nice pace with some good end to end action as both teams fielded a mix of youth and experience. The opening 20 minutes saw some slick play from Arsenal which was capped by a fantastic first goal for the club by Fran Merida, a great shot from just outside the box went in off the post. Liverpool however piled on pressure and scored a great goal of their own which put the tie back on an even keel. We had our chances in the first half to go ahead, the best of which fell to Nicklas Bendtner however he shot straight at the keeper. The half finished level but both teams had the capability of winning the game, worryingly Liverpool had a far more experienced bench than we did.

Our second goal came from Bendtner, a cross from Merida was met by Ramsey and Bendtner, once they worked out what to do with the ball the Dane was clear and lashed the ball into the roof of the net. A good goal, but it did not make up for his play on the night. I hate to pick on one player but he looked so disinterested at times, much like Arshavin can but Andrey has the skill to make up for that whereas Nicklas doesn’t. I struggle sometimes to see what Arsène does in him, he can look very lazy and wasteful. This really works against him and the crowd start to jump on his back, which in turn probably compounds his attitude to certain games.

Late into the game I was almost overjoyed to see the ball being held in the corner with a few minutes to go, very much like our previous number 14 would do. Perhaps something has been learnt afterall? The players held out well despite tiring legs and some chances for Liverpool.

My stand-out players of the night were;

Aaron Ramsey – played excellently. Some sublime passing and he can really work the ball when surrounded by a number of players. Much much improved from last year and some of the central midfield players should be very worried.

Craig Eastwood – a good debut. Shows a lot of promise. I think one for the future.

Samir Nasri – was good to see his return, another skilled midfield player who gives us another attacking dimension.

A mention must also goto our back 4; Gibbs, Senderos, Sylvestre, Gilbert, they played very well as a defensive unit and Senderos in particular looked much more composed than he had when he was previously in an Arsenal shirt. I hope he gets to be our third choice at centre back.

News today came that Fabianski injured his thigh and is out for three weeks, more on the keepers in the next few days….

So we are into the quarter finals of the Carling Cup, I hope Arsène keeps with this sort of squad mix for the rest of the competition. I would like to win a trophy, and if this is the first we win this season then I for one will be happy.
