Arsenal 5 – 0 Porto (agg6-2) Super Nic, Super Nasri, Super Arsenal

10 03 2010

In their last two visits to Arsenal, Porto lost 4-0 and 2-0. There was trepidation in some quarters that last night would see Arsenal struggle to overcome the 2-1 deficit we had from the first leg. No Fabregas, no Gallas, our fit striker having had a poor game on Saturday, some said everything pointed towards Arsenal struggling.

However this Arsenal side are putting distractions to one side and just getting on with playing football the way they want and, usually, winning. Despite fast starts, early goals have not been something we had seen this season; a lack of goals inside the opening 15 minutes has been oft commented on, but last night Nicklas Bendtner stepped up and fired home on 10 minutes following a header won by Arshavin then the Russian breaking with the ball. Nerves were settled and we took hold of the game. The attacking play we have come used to continued, chances were being created and had it not been for Porto ‘keeper Helton there would have been more goals early on. Bendtner was to provide our second on 25 minutes, redemption for him and a reward for fans’ patience on Saturday.

But at 2-0 up we knew that a goal for Porto would put the tie level again and our defence did at times look shaky, Sol in particular looked lost a few times and played some poor balls. But we weathered the storm, and going into the break two goals up was welcome tonic for all present.

The possibility of Porto being level in the tie was a little evident in the second half, we started slightly slower than in the first and Porto did seem to pick up play a bit better than we did. They attacked and had a few corners, the most worrying of which was a save on the line at the far post by Samir Nasri, who chested the ball down and Almunia gladly held the ball. This was not to be the only thing of note Nasri would do, shortly afterwards we broke down the Porto right. 3 defenders surrounded Nasri as he entered the box, some excellent footwork saw him round all three, then a shot past Helton into the far corner produced possibly one of the finest goals the home fans have seen in a while, certainly this season. 3-0 to Arsenal, the tie was ours.

Porto knew it, they sat back, but they still attacked. A counter attack from a corner, this time for Arsenal rather than against, was reminiscent of The Invincibles as Arshavin broke with the ball through the middle, he played the ball to substitute Eboue who rounded the keeper to fire home our fourth of the night. Eboue was again involved in the build up to our fifth goal, he was felled in the Porto area and Bendtner dispatched the resulting penalty to complete his first professional hattrick and complete the rout with virtually the last kick of the game.

Bendtner played as well as he did against Burnley, but this time the chances were converted and his 3 goals were good to see and will boost his confidence. I think the reception he got from the fans upon leaving the field on Saturday would have helped. Arshavin was excellent as well, he seems to excel in the European fixtures more so than he does in the Premier League, his trickery and footwork has more time in the European arena. Nasri, magnificent goal aside, was excellent in the “cesc” role and shows he can step into it when required.

So we are into the quarter finals of the Champions League, I hope we are not drawn against either English side (assuming they qualify) as I suspect they will not be beatable over the two legs given our recent performances against them, I also think it would hurt the team less to go out to a strong European side than it would to a domestic rival. I still think the Premier League is our more winnable trophy but am happy to see us progress further in the Champions League.

But we can revel in a demolition of Porto, 3 goals from Super Nic and a fine team performance. Come on you Gunners!!!!!

No Cesc news, Eboue in Africa, Song still here

29 12 2009

No update on the Cesc injury status as I write this. I didn’t think the club would have put anything out on a bank holiday anyway. I suspect we will hear about it in Arsene’s press conference later today. After the Villa game Arsene alluded to a purchase of a midfielder, especially given the injuries and the fact that Alex Song will depart on Monday for the ACN. But respect to Cameroon for not enforcing the 14 day rule which means we can keep our most improved player for the trip to Portsmouth (and possibly the FA Cup tie). However the Ivory Coast have called their players in and Eboue has already departed, I think we might miss his cover for Sagna and having him as an option on the bench.

An update on injury news later today or sometime tomorrow.

Arsenal 3 – 0 Hull, Hey mr tangerine man…..

20 12 2009

Hey mr tangerine man, it’s pretty clear to me,

That Arsenal are far better than Hull Ci-ty.

Yesterday Phil Brown returned to the grove, the match opened with a handshake (which was I am sure for effect shown on the big screens) between the two managers. In what was probably the coldest weather I can recall watching football, I sat with my Dad in the upper tier above my usual seat in block 6. The game started reasonably well for Arsenal, but Hull were pretty resilient and after a few minutes you could see that two games close together giving an element of fatigue and the absence of Fabregas meant we looked short of ideas and impetus to break down Hull. The game started to have a tempestuous edge to it when Stephen Hunt (most famous for his “challenge” on Petr Cech) bundled into Almunia after play had stopped, the Spanish keeper ran over to remonstrate with Hunt, the referee also spoke to the player. But it had little effect as he made two or three further challenges that warranted bookings.

Just before half time things did turn ugly, from our seats we saw a Hull player fall to the ground and then the rest of the players on the pitch bundled around Nasri, I thought I saw arms flailing as if it were a punch. Again Hunt was the main Hull agitator. Sylvestre was the boxing buddy, and carried the part off pretty well shielding Nasri. The replay on MOTD shows that Nasri stood on the Hull player’s (Garcia I think) foot, it was not a stamp. He might have meant it but we don’t know. Both Nasri and Hunt were booked after the melee.

Following on from this some rash challenges started to fly in and the ref had his whistle in his mouth almost permanently. He gave us a perhaps generous free kick after Diaby was felled. Nasri and Denilson stood over the ball, then Nasri joined the wall. In time honoured tradition of current Arsenal free kicks I expected this to go straight into the wall, but then, something magical happened.

Denilson hit a perfectly placed free kick into the net. It was fantastic. We were 1-0 up just before half time. After the game Arsène said “Denilson was not going to take the free kick”. Well I am glad he did!

As the players left the pitch there was some afters as they entered the tunnel, but no further bookings came of this. However I am not sure if Cesc’s clothing antagonised any of the Hull staff so we will have to wait for the report from their lawyers on that one.

The second half started with us on the front foot, Hull now needed to attack us and we had the chance for an early goal when Arshavin fed Eduardo, he really should have put it away but his current lack of match practice and form conspired against him sadly. Not long after this Hull were awarded possibly the softest penalty in football history (even Brown admitted it was soft after the game) when Fagan went down in our area. I was not confident at this point, Almunia has not played well of late and his ball distribution in the game was again poor. However he made a great save from the penalty and Hunt missed the follow up. I laughed at him.

Almost immediately after the penalty miss we were up at the other end, Diaby made a play in the left of their area and sent the ball across the Hull goal for Eduardo to tap in, he didn’t look that happy when he scored but perhaps his form is playing on his mind. The game was pretty much ours now with half an hour remaining. Hull provided little resistance beyond that point and we took full control of the game, some press reports say we struggled but I certainly disagree as did my non-Gooner father who I feel gave a balance view on the game.

But another goal was to come, Diaby danced through the Hull defence and scored a great goal. 3-0 to the Arsenal. “Stand up if you hate Phil Brown” and “Tango whats the score” reverberated around the stadium, much to our, and I suspect Arsène’s, amusement. Theo and Aaron Ramsey were introduced as subs which I think meant our front 6 players were under 23, a great thing for the future of the club. Theo had a chance late on when he chipped the advancing keeper only to see it go agonisingly just past the post, thankfully this was met with chants of his name from the crowd rather than something else.

So it was 3 points, which was great given Utd losing earlier in the day. We are now 2 behind them with a game in hand (at home to Bolton on the 6th Jan) but Villa are pretty close behind and I suspect our next game at home against them will be a very tough test. A few players did well today, the midfield trio of Song, impressive as ever, Denilson, a great goal and some good tackles, and Diaby, one of his better games, were the key today. Yes they didn’t have the creativity that Cesc has but they all put in solid performances, Diaby needs to work on his first touch still but he continues to develop. If he can erase the poorer moments of his game and be more energetic like he was in spells today then he can be a mainstay in this team. Almunia also did well; he has been criticised, and rightly so, of late. His ball distribution was poor for the first hour today, but the penalty save gave him a much needed confidence boost and after that he looked more settled, he made a good save late on as well. He might not be a top top keeper but he is what we have at the moment and he needs our backing all the way. Eboue again impressed at right back, I think that should be where he plays from now on. Rotate him and Sagna so we don’t have a right back injury crisis like that on our left.

So we are still in the hunt at Christmas, this season is far from over and I can see Chelsea, Utd and sadly us lose at least 2 or 3 games more before the season end. But we can revel in our third place in the table and be glad our board have the confidence in what our manager is doing and don’t make any rash mid-season sackings like two other money laden clubs seem to have as their model of how they think football should be run.

Come on The Arsenal

Burnley v Arsenal preview, Denilson and Traore out, Eboue back, Arshavin hard as they come

16 12 2009

As seems the custom for an Arsenal blog we shall begin with the injury update. Denilson will miss tonight’s game due to a back problem, when I heard this my first thought was a recurrence of his previous issue with his back – Arsène says he hopes the Brazilian will be fit for Saturday but they need to check to see if it is a recurrence of that previous injury. Armand Tarore will also miss the game, his hamstring is the source of his injury, so we can expect to see Sylvester fill in at left back. Interestingly the boss is afraid that the veteran defender may leave in the summer as he is not getting enough games. Emmanuel Eboue makes a return which may mean he starts at right back, or gives us an option for an impact sub later in the game.

Andrey Arshavin, scorer of the wonder goal against Liverpool, revealed that he hadn’t used his foot for the week running up to the game. He did limp off and was set to miss tonight with the very same injury, but he has “demanded” to play and will ignore the pain. Perhaps some of our other players could learn from this. Having watched him for almost a year now, he does take a number of knocks when he plays, but mainly just gets up and gets on with it. Proper old fashioned footballer! I like it.

Tonight is an improtant game, not because of the points but because of the impact it could have on our season. A poor result tonight undoes all the work at Anfield, it extracts that belief the players had after that game, it makes our other title rivals think that we were just a flash in the pan and there is no reason to look over their shoulders at us. Turf moor is not an easy place to goto, but if the players play with the conviction that they know they can win then the 3 points should be ours.

Come on Arsenal!

(short) Arsenal v Liverpool preview

11 12 2009

I am 30 today so not much time for the blog this weekend.

A very quick liverpool preview, Theo expects to be fit after his knock in Greece, Gallas, Traore, Fabregas and Arshavin should be back after picking up knocks against Stoke, Emmanuel Eboue will not feature due to his hamstring problem. I suspect it will be a fairly open game with a few goals, hopefully another 4 for Arshavin!!

Arsenal 2 – 0 Stoke, back to winning ways, is Arshavin the answer, injuries keep coming

6 12 2009

picture from arsenal.com

It’s back. An Arsenal win. It feels so much better leaving the stadium when the team have put a good performance in, even better when they have won. Yesterday saw Arsenal play much more as a team than they did against Sunderland and Chelsea, the passing worked, the team looked more “together” as well.

The first half started with the usual Arsenal pacy play and we had a few opportunities early on which would show that in the main we would dominate the game. Arshavin was fouled just after 20 minutes and we were awarded a penalty for this, up stepped Cesc. But it was saved by Sorenson in the Stoke goal. I was thinking that this was going to be one of those days. For pretty much the rest of the half you could see that the miss was playing on Cesc’s mind as well. However the goal did come not long after the penalty miss, Cesc combined with Arshavin and the Russian fired home a lovely cross goal ball. 1-0 to the Arsenal, we haven’t sang that in a few weeks in the league.

The second half saw Rosicky, and Eboue leave the field, on came Vela and Ramsey. Both youngsters looked far more comfortable in this game than in the last few as well and their pace and skill was an extra threat to Stoke, Vela was running down the wing in front of my seat and his trickery was nice to see so close up. We had another couple of chances for Arshavin but Sorenson, who had a good game in goal, kept them at bay (one of the chances was simply beautiful football with a Cesc-Arshavin combo that needed a goal to cap it off, but sadly that didn’t happen). However our second was to come via Arshavin, a one-two with Ramsey saw a layoff to the Welshman and he used his pace to break through the defence and rifle a shot home, the press didn’t make too much of this goal but for a youngster at another club they would have been backpage spreads, oh well.

So in the end we ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, it was not our best performance, but it was clinical enough to get a win, a couple of goals and a clean sheet against a team who can threaten on their day.

However I am now going to talk Arshavin. I love him as a player, he genuinely excited me when he arrived being our first big name signing in a number of years. Last season he seemed to prove everyone right, but this year he has been pretty flat. However yesterday he played the best I have seen him play in a while. He harried players, chased a lot of things down (as did most of the team to be fair) and had things gone his way he could easily of had 4 goals. Now I think what has changed things is where he was played, for a while he has been saying he plays best through the middle and not on the wings; yesterday he got that chance and showed how good he can be as a central player. He was far more involved in the play, he can combine with Cesc and also give him a breather in the game. I am not convinced he can be a lone striker as he clearly does not have the height but as more of a Bergkamp figure he fits in very well. Arsène said in the press conference that playing him centrally “needs to be tried away from home” to see if it properly works. He isn’t the answer to van Persie’s absence, but for the next 5 or 6 games until the transfer window opens he will do pretty well I think. Keep him central please!!

I alluded to injuries above; we can add 5 names to the list. Eduardo – injured his thigh in training, not sure how long he will be out for. Eboue -picked up a muscular problem in the game, hopefully not too serious but will miss Wednesday. Traore & Gallas – both picked up a hamstring problem, again hopefully not too serious. Rosicky – injured groin, out for a while according to Arsène. Thankfully we can miss them mid-week against Olympiacos, but if this had been a must win game things would have looked bleak.

The full squad don’t play until Sunday, so some time to recover for the slightly injured trio we have. But it was good to get the win yesterday. Things at the top look very different now as well, Chelsea lost to City, if we win our game in hand it’s back to 5 points. It still is up for grabs.

Arsenal v Standard Liege preview, Arsene’s press conference, Gibbs returns

23 11 2009

Arsène held his usual pre-game press conference today ahead of our Champions League tie against Standard Liege on Tuesday night. The initial news from the press conference was on the player availability, it will be the same group of players who faced Sunderland with the addition of Kieran Gibbs who has surprised Arsène with the speed of his return. I think it is also good that Gallas did not pick up an injury despite limping for some of the game on Saturday. Arsène also talked about some longer term injuries; Bendtner and van Persie are both “some time away”, Gael Clichy is 2-3 weeks, he then said “have I forgotten somebody” only to be reminded of Abou Diaby who has 3 weeks out due to another calf injury.

I would expect some rotation to take place, Gibbs is likely to get the nod ahead of Traore and perhaps Senderos will join Vermaelen and Eboue in a back four. I suspect Theo might get the nod to start, perhaps through the middle. Attacking wise though it is very hard to predict who might start given the wealth of options in the team.

The mood in the squad is one of disappointment following the defeat at Sunderland, however a win would not only turn this round but also help us finish top of the group. Which should be what the players are focussed on at this juncture, Sunday can be thought about from Wednesday. We need to be focussed against Liege, they scored 2 quick goals in the away tie and a repeat of which is something which I don’t want to even comprehend.

Arsène said a top of the group finish would feel like a job well done, and despite only needing a point from the next two games to qualify there is no temptation to be defensive. I suspect this might be linked to the fact the team don’t understand such a concept, as enjoying as flowing attacking football is to watch it does not help calm this supporter’s nerves in tight games (or even those when we are a few goals up).

A win tomorrow would be a nice response from the players, not only to their disappointment but that of the fans as well. Defeats hurt, we as fans want to be back to winning ways and hopefully that will resume tomorrow night and carry on into the weekend.

Late news tomorrow either here or on twitter if any arrives.

Arsenal 4 – 1 AZ Alkmaar, sometimes we make it look so easy

5 11 2009

So last night saw us face a team we managed to throw a 1 goal lead away to not a fortnight earlier. The advantage we had in our own stadium was of course going to play a part in this encounter. Sadly I was not present, I have a cold and my shoulder is painful beyond belief so I decided not to travel but to stay at home and watch on Sky.

We started the game well and our passing looked fluid, Eboue came in for Sagna, Nasri started in place of Bendtner and Gibbs replaced Clichy. Yet the team looked no different, our bench weak? we lack depth in our squad? get to fuck. Our team plays like the same unit no matter who out of our top 16 or so players starts, which is no mean feat and a great compliment to Arsène and his coaching staff.

Our first goal arrived on 26 minutes, Cesc fired a shot at goal and it managed to beat the Alkmaar keeper. I was shocked it went in, and I suspect so was Cesc (he did look a bit pissed off after he scored, not sure why). Alkmaar responded to the goal by upping their game a little, but this only allowed us to expose them a bit more.

Just before half time, in a goal reminiscent of the second in the NLD, Nasri was clean through and rifled a shot into the bottom corner. Our 17th goalscorer of the season I think, wow! We were 2 up and pretty comfortable, but having been in that same position in other games at half time I suspect the team talk reminded the players of that fact.

Arshavin, who looked a bit more involved that in previous games, helped set up Cesc for our third of the night. A lovely through ball allowed Cesc to run clear and rifle a shot into the net. He ran over to the fans and looked a lot happier at this goal, 8 now this season for Captain Fantastic.

With resting players in mind Cesc and van Persie came off not long after to allow Eduardo and Ramsey to get in on the action. And get in on the action Eduardo did, an audacious backheel set Arshavin free who hit a ball across the area to Diaby, who controlled the overhit pass well and rifled into the net. 4 goals, again.

Rosicky made a return to action coming on for Arshavin and it was good to see him return from injury as I was worried he might miss a lengthy period again.

A few words on Diaby, he played pretty well last night. Looked interested, looked to be trying hard. Why can he not do that all the time? Unlike Alex Song, who again tried really hard and put in another excellent performance in the DM role in front of the back 4.

Alkmaar got a late consolation goal, which I think will annoy Almunia as he went the wrong way for the ball. But it was a resounding victory for Arsenal, and as I said in the title of the post sometimes we make it look so easy.

Qualification is almost guarenteed form the group barring some freak results in the last 2 games we are in the knock out stages. I am away this weekend so will probably only give a brief blog update or some twitter action on the game against Wolves.

Arsenal v Tottenham preview – who will be in goal?

30 10 2009

Almost exactly a year since the teams last met at the grove, the wounds are still there from that 4-4 defeat. Yes I did say defeat because that’s pretty much what it was in all honesty. I remember being stunned by their fourth goal, I rolled my scarf up and put it in my pocket. The walk back from the ground to the tube was a quiet one.

This season the wheels are yet to fall off roflenham’s campaign, but the better they think they are the funnier it is when they fall to their rightful position in the league.

Our line up should pick itself provided we don’t have any injuries overnight, a back four of Sagna, Vermaelen, Gallas, Clichy is likely but I would not object to Gibbs starting on the left. In the middle I expect Song, Cesc, Diaby, but Nasri could be used or come on as a sub later in the game. Our front line of Arshavin, van Persie, Eboue is likely, but Eduardo may feature in that three. Which ever way the outfield 10 goes I feel confident.

What I am concerned with though is who plays in goal. Fabianski is out, so it’s down to Mannone or Almunia. Arsène says he has chosen his keeper for Sp*rs, I hope it’s Almunia. No disrespect to Vito but this is a big big game, we cannot lose this one. A win is pretty much a must otherwise that lot will be world champions all over again, like they think they have been so many times in the past. We need a strong keeper at the back, whilst it can be debated Almunia is not all that, he is the best we have.

This, it goes without saying, is a massive game. A result here must take precedence over everything else that has happened recently. Forget throwing away the lead in two games. Forget what some former player might be saying. Think only about beating them by a number of goals. I hope Arshavin has a brilliant game, he knows how much this derby means to us fans. I want to see him with his finger on his lips as he waddles to the corner flag after scoring a couple of screamers.

Come on you Gunners, do this for the fans!

West Ham v Arsenal preview

24 10 2009

So it’s West Ham tomorrow, last season we won 2-0 away to them and whilst we might not keep a clean sheet I can see us winning tomorrow. I expect Eduardo may get to start, but Arsène may stick with the Arshavin-van Persie-Eboue front three. I would expect Eboue to feature, either at right back or as the right side of the front three. But we don’t need to rest any players in reality given that the next game is Saturday and there will be mostly youngsters playing Wednesday in the Carling Cup. Bendtner was still rated as 50/50 yesterday, if he does get deemed fit I doubt we will see him start.

On the goalkeeper front I wonder if we might see all three feature in our next three games, tomorrow Mannone, Wednesday Fabianski and Almunia will return for the North London Derby. It will be interesting to see whatever way Arsène decides to pick the man in goal.

We really should have a more positive look in tomorrow’s game. I think the laid back approach we saw when 2-0 against Birmingham and 1-0 against AZ Alkmaar will not be there. Hopefully that has given the team a kick up the backside to tell them it won’t all be easy wins this season to get a trophy or two. A quick start with a couple of early goals then apply more pressure rather than let the game come to us would be nice to see. Hopefully they have all been told something similar in the last few days.

The game is live on Sky tomorrow, so hopefully an entertaining afternoon is in store, comedy if Liverpool get beaten but if they win it means we have a great chance of closing at the top of the table, our game follows so there is a chance to get some points to cement our place where we rightly belong. Unlike some of the pretenders who are starting to cock it up. Enjoy the game wherever you are watching.
